Riding for the Fallen comes to Yarrow Days

Since 2002, nine soldiers from B.C. have been killed in Afghanistan; three in the last six months. And yet, there hasn't been a place for people to pay their respects and to show their support, similar to the Highway of Heroes in eastern Canada.

Until now.

On Saturday, June 12, the 3rd CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) Ubique Unit is holding its first ever Memorial Ride for the Fallen. On Saturday June 5th, they rode in the Yarrow Days Parade with a large contingent of Canadian Military Vehicles and the Canadian Legion and the Pipe Band.

It's been a long time since so many military vehicles were in Yarrow. Soldiers practiced their marching on Yarrow streets as part of their training during World War II and there was a large group based on the Knox farm during the high water in 1948 helping protect the Yarrow Dykes.

Hank Giesbrecht — 65 Years as Yarrow's Barber

Hank Giesbrecht - Yarrow's Barber

        Hank "the Barber" Giesbrecht

Henry Giesbrecht, also known as M. Hank, opened his first barber shop in Yarrow in 1945.

In the picture left, he stands in front of his barber shop, across the street from the Yarrow Park, and the Yarrow Deli located in the old Yarrow Post Office building.

Hanks' barber shop is located in the old Del Monte photographic studio which he purchased in 1951. Many Yarrow families had their family's photographs taken here.

Entering Hank's shop, one feels that one has entered a time warp, as the interior, with its barber chairs, benches, mirrors, and fixtures, is virtually unchanged from the 1950's.

Below left, Hank's first barber shop; below right, Henry Giesbrecht and Leonard Froese.
