IRMA ANNY SUKKAU December 7, 1927 - May 13, 2012
Irma Anny Sukkau died peacefully on Sunday morning, May 13, 2012 at the Bethania Personal Care Home, and entered her heavenly home at the age of 84 years. Irma was predeceased by her beloved parents Rev. Gerhard Sukkau (1965) and Lena Sukkau (1978). Irma was born in Arnaud, Manitoba, the precious, only child of her parents.
She grew up on the family farm and had a very happy childhood. At age 11, the family moved to Yarrow, BC where she attended Yarrow Elementary School, followed by High School in Chilliwack, BC. After graduation from High School, Irma worked at Sears for one year and then attended Yarrow Elim Bible School. Following this she completed a three year Registered Psychiatric Nursing program, and then went on to earn her Registered Nurse designation from the North Middlesex Hospital in London, England. Irma had a long, varied, challenging and rewarding career as a nurse.
For a period of time she worked in a drug rehabilitation centre in London, England, then at Essondale Mental Hospital and Woodlands School in British Columbia. She was passionate about caring for profoundly handicapped infants and children, and even in recent years shared memories of her experiences with severely challenged patients.
After the death of her father, Irma returned to Winnipeg to live with her mother. During this time she worked in Psychiatry at the Winnipeg General Hospital, and as a clinical nurse at the Manitoba Clinic. She concluded her nursing career as matron of the Nightingale Nursing Home for 13 years, in the field of psycho-geriatric care.
After retirement, Irma enjoyed volunteering at Work and Social Opportunities. We will remember Irma as a confident, independent and adventurous person. She was a dedicated, caring and clinically competent nurse.
Irma lived at Bethania Personal Care Home for four years and the family is most grateful to the dedicated staff for the kind, friendly and respectful care she received. A Celebration of Irma's life was held on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Glen Eden Funeral Home,
