NEUFELD, Edward John

Edward John Neufeld was born on May 20, 1935, to John and Mary Neufeld in Drake, SK, Canada. His family moved to Yarrow, BC, Canada when Edward was nine. Ed attended Yarrow Elementary school and Chilliwack High School.

Edward met Margaret Wiens in the fall of 1958, and they were married on Feb. 6, 1960. Ed and Marg lived in Vancouver, BC where Ed graduated from UBC medical school in the spring of 1962. They then moved to Los Angeles for a one-year medical residency followed by moves to Prince George, Vancouver and Fresno, California. In 1967, Ed, Marg, and their four children trekked off on a five-year adventure first to Brussels, Belgium and then to the Congo, Africa where they served as medical missionaries with Mennonite Brethren Missions.

In 1972, they settled in Fresno. Here, Ed and Marg worked in a private medical practice until 1992 with Ed, a surgeon performing surgeries at Saint Agnes and Community Medical Center. Ed specialized in general, vascular and thoracic surgery. He also enjoyed serving with Christian Medical and Dental Society.

Ed and Marg loved to travel with family and friends, visiting over 45 countries. Ed enjoyed woodworking, motor homing, spending time with his grandchildren and supporting Marg's quilting. They were generous and hospitable, and their home was a place for social gatherings with family and friends. Parkinson's disease slowed Ed down but didn't define him as he graciously dealt with physical setbacks.

Edward passed peacefully into his Creator's embrace on March 13, 2015 with his family beside him. Edward was predeceased by Margaret, his wife of 52 years, and leaves behind four children and their spouses: Patty and Chris Neufeld-Erdman, Pauline and Ray Stobbe, Philip and Debbie Neufeld, Pamela and John Celum, as well as thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Mardy Thiessen (Jake), and brother, Len Neufeld (Joyce). Edward shared his faith heritage with his family and community and left a strong legacy.

The family thanks the staff at Cottonwood Court and Saint Agnes Hospice for their competent and compassionate care. A memorial service was held at Bethany Church, Fresno, on April 18, 2015.
