MARTENS Sarah Florence

MARTENS Sarah Florence late of Clearbrook B.C. passed away on January 19, 1993 at age 77 at the MSA Hospital in Abbotsford BC.

Sarah was born July 21, 1915 in Franztal, South Russia to Peter & Katherine (Janzen) Dirks, their sixth child. She was 11 years old when she came to Canada with her mother and siblings in 1926. They lived on a farm in Rosser Manitoba with their extended Janzen/Dirks family, where her mother passed away in 1927. She came to Yarrow BC with her brothers George, Nick and Jake and sisters Katherine and Helen in 1930 and later joined the Yarrow MB Church.

On December 30, 1938, Sara married John H. Martens at the Yarrow MB Church. Four daughters: Hilda, Nancy, Lillian and Josephine were born to them. Music was important to Sarah and all her daughters took music lessons and excelled in playing instruments, Hilda, Lillian and Josephine on the piano and Nancy on the violin.

She was predeceased by her husband John; her father, Peter Dirks, in 1916 in Russia, brothers George and Nick, Dirks; sisters, Katherine Suderman and Helen Enns in Canada.

Sarah is survived by loving children: Hilda V. (Rudolf) Reimer of Abbotsford, Nancy (Frank) Dyck of Clearbrook, Lillian N. (Alexander) Rogalsky of Clearbrook, Josephine Martens of Lasqueti Island; 8 grandchildren: Candice Rogalsky, Corinne Reimer, Mathew Dyck, Harwood Reimer, Jeffrey Dyck, Derek Rogalsky; 1 great-granddaughter Tallia Reimer and one brother Jake Dirks.

Funeral services were held Friday January 22, 1993 at Clearbrook M.B. Church with Pastor John E. Klassen officiating. Burial was in Maclure Road Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her grandsons. Woodlawn funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
