Peter P. Martens was born in Rückenau Molotschna in 1882. He was born again in 1900 and baptized the same year.
In May 15, 1903, he married Helena Wieler in South Russia near the Black Sea. Peter was a store keeper. During World War I, he was a manager of a Red Cross warehouse supplying hospitals and trains which brought the wounded in from the battlefields.
Four sons: Peter, John, David and Walter; 4 daughters: Helen, Susie, Margaret were born from this union.
In 1925, they moved to Ontario Canada and to Coaldale, Alberta in 1927. They farmed there until 1942 when they moved to Yarrow B.C. where they had a berry farm until they retired.
They celebrated their golden (1953) and diamond (1963) wedding anniversaries at Yarrow. After spending a year in the Tabor Home in Abbotsford, he went to be with the Lord on October 1, 1972. He was 90 years old. Funeral services were held at Yarrow MB Church. Burial was at Yarrow Cemetery.
Mrs. Helena Martens - A resident of the district for 25 years, Mrs. Helena Martens died on August 11, 1967 in Chilliwack General Hospital. Mrs. Martens was born in Russia on October 19, 1882.
She is survived by her husband Peter, 1046 Dyke Road, four sons: Peter, Clearbrook; John, Arnold, BC; David, Clearbrook; Walter, Richmond, B.C.; four daughters: Helen, Yarrow; Mrs. H. (Susie) Walde, Chilliwack; Mrs. J. (Margaret) Janz, Vauxhall, Alberta; Mrs. J. (Lydia) Isaak, Yarrow; 48 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. F.C. Thiessen Abbotsford B.C.
Rev. David Friesen and Rev. Hugo Janz officiated at the funeral service at the Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church. Pall bearers were Peter W. Martens, John P. Martens, David P. Martens, H. Walde and John Isaak. Burial was at Yarrow Cemetery.
