LOEWEN, Gerhard

Yarrow, B.C. 21 October 1934.

It is just one step between me and my death!

Healthy and lively our neighbour, Gerhard Loewen, a man of 43 years, left his home at 9:30 am on the 18th of October 1934 to see if, it was at all possible for him to get a ride to the city of Chilliwack.

After he, Loewen, had spoken to several neighbours on the street, a truck came driving slowly towards them. Loaded on the truck were approximately 2 tons of peas. Loewen knew the owner and the driver of the truck, held up his hand to stop the truck.

The truck slowed down to 4-5 mph, but before the truck stopped completely, Loewen gave the driver a signal with his hand to "go ahead!"

The truck driver thought that Loewen had changed his mind (that he wanted a ride), and shifted into a lower gear and continued driving.

A heart shaking scream! --- the accident happened.

Loewen, as it appeared, wanted to swing himself from the side up onto the platform of the truck and must have slipped and was run over by the right rear wheel of the heavily loaded truck.

There were quite a few people working on the road at the place where this happened (including the person who wrote this report).

The injured (man) was lifted into a car that was standing there and as quickly as possible, was brought to the hospital in Chilliwack, where he succumbed to his great pain and passed away about 12:30 noon, approximately 2 1/2 hours after his injury.

He never spoke any more words.

Saturday, the 20th of October, the body, whose soul had left, was laid to rest with many people showing their caring and sympathy (to the family).

In all seriousness, the words from Psalm 90: Lord, so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. (King James) And Psalm 39: 5: You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath" were spoken to us. (NIV) (translation note - the verses are slightly different than the English)

It was for the dear Sister Loewen, so too for her only (10 year old) daughter, unspeakably hard to carry this bitter pain, so much that she almost broke down. She believes with complete certainty that her husband died as a believer, and this she also expressed in her clear, childlike prayer.

Our prayer is: May the Lord comfort the deeply sorrowing.
