JANZEN, Jacob K.

Jacob K. Janzen

1874 – 1960

Jacob Klaas Janzen passed away in Chilliwack General Hospital on March 1, 1960. He was born in Franztal, South Russia on November 1, 1874. He was married to Katharina Enns born on April 19, 1901.

He was still very young when his father passed away and they took over the responsibility for the family farm. They had several children and had a happy family life until 1914 when the First World War began. Jacob was with those who were called first into military service. He wasn’t able to return home, even for a visit before the Russian Revolution broke out.

This time was very hard for Katharina as she had to look after the farm and care for the children alone. They were happy and thankful that they were able to leave Russia September 25, 1925 and immigrate to Canada.

In 1926, they bought a 1200-acre farm at Rosser, Manitoba along with two cousins and their families. After a few years on the farm, the depression set in and they had no hope of ever getting the farm paid up, so they sold what they could and came to Yarrow B.C. in 1930 and were able to buy a small farm on Ford Road. Their eldest son Jacob and his family took over the farm and they retired to a nice home in Yarrow in 1934 where they had a nice garden, vegetables and flowers and Jacob had a wood working shop in the small barn on the property where he built furniture for his children.

His wife Katharine wasn’t well and she passed away February 13th, 1940 after a lengthy illness. Jacob was alone for four years and then he married Helena P. Janzen nee Thiessen on October 23, 1944.

He is survived by his wife Helena at 987 Second Street Yarrow; two sons Jacob (Helen) Janzen and Henry (Mary) Janzen, Yarrow; four daughters: Miss Helen Janzen, Vancouver, Mrs. George (Elizabeth) Epp, Yarrow; Mrs. John (Katharine) Isaac, Yarrow; and Mrs. Peter (Cornelia) Siemens, Matsqui; a sister: Mrs. Fred Steinle, Kansas, USA; six step-children, 27 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held for Jacob K. Janzen at the Yarrow MB Church with Rev. Peter Neufeld officiating, assisted by Rev. Peter Loewen
