HOOGE, Mary Dahl

Mary Hooge was born March 10, 1907 to Johann & Judith Dahl in Village #9, Terek, Russia. Mary passed away November 18, 1984 at Abbotsford, B.C.

In February 1918 the Dahl family fled to Alexandertal, Ukraine, where her mother died in 1919. She came to Canada in 1925 and was baptized in Dalmeny, Sask in 1926.

The Dahl family moved to Yarrow, B.C. in 1928 where Mary married George Hooge on June 16, 1929, theirs was the first wedding among the Mennonites in Yarrow.

In 1946 they moved to Arnold B.C. where they farmed until retiring to Abbotsford in 1966.

Mary is remembered for her amazing memory for the names of people and her deep care for the individual.

She was predeceased by her son Johnny who passed away at the age of four.

She is survived by her husband George, 7 sons: Ernie of Coquitlam B.C.; Hardy of Deroche, B.C.; Helmut and Werner of Burnaby, B.C.; Jake of Vancouver, Henry of Abbotsford, and Bill of Mission B.C.; daughters: Marian Penner of New Hazelton, B.C.; Erna Ratzlaff and Elsie Willms of Edmonton, Alta.; Lorie Engbrecht of Red Deer, Alta.; and Carol Siemens of Abbotsford, B.C.; 33 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; one sister and three brothers.

Her funeral was held November 21, 1984 in South Abbotsford MB Church with pastor David Epp and David Nickel ministering. Burial was at Yarrow Cemetery.
