Maria Friesen

1866 – 1955

Maria Friesen (Sawatsky) was born in Rosenthal Chortitza on January 26, 1866. Her parents were Jakob J. & Maria Sawatsky. She was the sister of Susanna Froese, Jacob Sawatsky, Abraham Sawatsky, Katharina Klassen and Peter Sawatsky. She was 89 years old when she passed away April 25, 1955 in New Westminster, B.C.

Mrs. Friesen lived in Yarrow for 11 years, one year with her daughter, Mrs. Paul Bergman and 10 years in the Yarrow Mission Home. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob Friesen whom she married in Russia in 1890.

Chilliwack Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for the funeral at the South Abbotsford Mennonite Brethren Church for Mrs. Maria Friesen who died in April at the Home for the Aged, Port Coquitlam, B.C. Rev. J.J. Stobbe assisted by Rev. H. Lenzmann officiated.

Mrs. Friesen is survived by three sons: Jacob and Henry Friesen of Manitoba, Ab. Friesen, of Abbotsford; two daughters Mrs. Henry Stobbe, Manitoba and Mrs. Paul Bergman of Yarrow, 50 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ernest Bergman, John Toews, Ab. Friesen, Glen Friesen, Jack Stobbe and Albert Voth.
