John Enns died Feb. 13, 2010. He was born May 6, 1921 in Neu Schoensee, Sagradowka, Russia to Johann and Sara Enns. After his father’s death in 1922, his mother remarried, and the family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling near Didsbury, Alta.

At 16, John accepted Christ at Gem Bible School and, a year later, was baptized in 1938. John attended Bible School in Coaldale and Yarrow. During World War II, he worked on a farm as a conscientious objector.

John married Louise Toews in Oct. 1945. They studied at MB Bible College, Winnipeg. John taught school in Grossweide and Chortitz, Man. for 7 years. In 1959, they moved to Abbotsford, B.C., and John taught at MEI and schools in Surrey, B.C.

In 1963, he was ordained at Clearbrook MB Church, where he served as pastor and moderator. From 1964–1986 he ran a raspberry farm.

John and Louise retired in Clearbrook. John enjoyed fishing. Predeceased by Louise in 2006, daughter Louise and 3 siblings.

John is mourned by children John (Mary Lou), Viola Connolly, Vangie (Harold) Esau, Jim (Janet), Marianne (Michael) Crowe, Helen; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 1 sister.





Louise Enns nee Toews

1921- 2006

Louise was born August 19th 1921 in Russia to Anna (Neufeld) and Isaac Toews, the 5th of 8 children. At the age of 5, her family escaped the Russian revolution for Canada, but Louise was detained in England for 2 years, while she underwent medical treatments. Two years later, at the age of 7, she arrived on a railway platform in Herbert, Saskatchewan, carrying only her suitcase and a nametag. She had preceded the telegram that announced her coming. Two women, angels of mercy, helped her to reunite with her family.

Louise recalled hard work and happy times in those years. She was baptized by the confession of her faith in 1937.

Her family moved to BC in 1940, where she had attended the Yarrow Bible School and met her husband, John Enns. They were married in 1945 in the Arnold MB Church.

Their first son was born during the Sumas Flood of 1948. The years following took them to Manitoba for college and then teaching opportunities for John. By 1960, when they had finally settled again in BC, there were 7 children. Those years saw Louise directing the day-to-day operations in the house and on the farm while John took night classes at UBC.

Louise’s family was the joy of her life. Evening stories were told with the older children in pajamas on the bed while Louise nursed the youngest one in her arms. She enrolled them in music lessons and Saturday German school during the elementary years and worked hard to ensure that they could attend the MEI.

Louise was active in church, singing in choirs, teaching Sunday School and organizing Ladies groups. Her grandchildren remember her freshly baked buns and faithful prayers. During her last years, as she moved from home to hospital, she remained confident in Jesus Christ. One week before slipping into a coma on January 4, 2006 she led the family in singing “To God be the Glory”.

Louise is survived by her husband John of 60 years; 7 children John (MaryLou), Louise, Viola, Vange (Harold), Jim (Janet), Marianne (Michael), and Helen; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. The most recent great grandchild was born 3 days before she died and is named Jessica Louise, in her honor.

Viewing was held on January 6, 2006 at Woodlawn Funeral Home. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 from Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford followed by an Interment at Maclure Road Cemetery next to her husband John.
