DYCK, Jacob and Katharina


Jacob Peter Dyck

1897 - 1970

Jacob Peter Dyck of Yarrow, B.C. passed away at the Chilliwack General Hospital on January 12, 1970. He was 72 years old. He was born on October 10, 1897 in the Ukraine area of Russia. He married Katharina Penner in 1918. He emigrated to Canada in 1926 and lived at Gilroy Saskatchewan until 1941 when he along with his wife and children, moved to Yarrow, B.C.

He is survived by his wife Katherine; six sons: Jacob and Cornelius of Yarrow, Peter, Ben and Henry of Chilliwack and John of Vedder Crossing; three daughters: Kay (John) Schellenberg and Helen (Louis) Thiessen of Yarrow and Mrs. Ann Reimer of Burnaby; 34 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was observed from the Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church on January 15, 1970 with Rev. H. G. Thielman ministering with Rev. Jacob Dyck and Rev. John Bell also participating.

Burial was at Yarrow Cemetery.




Katharina Dyck

1896 - 1991

Katharina Dyck of Abbotsford, B.C. was born December 14, 1896 to Cornelius & Anna Penner in Steinau, No. 1, Russia. Her parents instilled in her a love for God and pleasure in her job as a seamstress.

At age 18, she committed her life to Lord.

She married Jacob P. Dyck on August 16, 1918. In 1923, they immigrated to Gilroy, Saskatchewan. They were baptized and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church. Jacob was elected Church Leader, and their home became a place of friendly hospitality. They farmed in Saskatchewan until 1941 when they moved to Yarrow, B.C. They fellowshipped in the Yarrow MB Church. Jacob died in January 1970.

In 1972, two years after Jacob passed away, Katharina moved to a senior’s complex near the Broadway M.B. Church in Chilliwack, B.C. and in 1988 she moved to the Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC.


Her faith remained strong, and the love of God shone in her life. Her last days were precious times with her Saviour and family. She remained of sound mind, quoting Psalms and songs from memory and indicating her desire to be with the Lord. She passed away March 12, 1991.

Katharina was predeceased by her husband Jacob in 1970 and her son Peter in 1982.

She is remembered by her three daughters Kay Schellenberg and Anne Reimer of Chilliwack and Helen Thiessen of Yarrow; three sons: Jacob, Henry and Bernie of Sardis, B.C.; 33 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren’ 1 great-great-grand-daughter and 1 brother.

Her funeral was held in the Menno Hospital Chapel with Henry Claassen ministering.

Burial was at Yarrow Cemetery.
