MARTENS, Henry Peter



Henry Peter Martens

Henry Peter Martens, 80, of 42540 Central Road, Yarrow B.C. passed away on April 1, 1981 at Chilliwack General Hospital. He was born on May 3, 1900 in Orloff, Sagradowka, Ukraine.

He married Maria Friesen in 1922. The couple immigrated to Canada in 1924, settling in Saskatchewan in 1925. In 1931, he accepted Christ and was baptized into the Mennonite Brethren Church.

In 1941 Henry & Maria Martens moved to Yarrow B.C. He farmed in Yarrow, and did maintenance and construction work in Chilliwack. In his earlier years, he was active in Sunday School and later he served as treasurer of the Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church.

He is survived by his wife Maria; sons and daughters and spouses: Erwin & Francis of Abbotsford, Mary & Abe Schellenberg; Hedy & John Martens; Agnes & Jake Wiebe all of Abbotsford, B.C. Hank & Magdalene of Yarrow; Jack & Joyce of Victoria; Peter & Frieda, Victor & Mary Ann both of Richmond, B.C. and son-in-law Peter Fenton of Waterloo, Ontario; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Elizabeth Giesbrecht of Abbotsford, Maria Kroeker of Clearbrook and Annie Martens of Vancouver. He was predeceased by daughter Helen Fenton in 1980.

Funeral for Henry Peter Martens was held April 4, 1981 in the Yarrow M.B. Church with pastor A.L. Klassen and P.D. Loewen officiating. Interment followed in Yarrow Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Rick, Bryan, Danny and Bob Martens, Donald Schellenberg and Alan Wiebe.
