MARTENS, Abraham (Abe) Herman

Abraham (Abe) Herman Martens, aged 81, went peacefully in his sleep to be with the Lord on January 21, 2003.

He was born in Kuterla, Neu Samara, Russia Apr 1, 1921. When he was 5, the family left Russia; due to medical problems they spent time in England and Mexico before coming to Canada.

They settled in Tofield, Alta. He helped on the family farm. He worked at Staufer farm and drove truck for Rogers Trucking. He bought his own Rogers truck.

He married Katherine Klassen in Lindbrook MB Church Oct 22, 1941. After trucking and crop failures, they moved to Yarrow, BC. He drove truck for Vedder Transport for 28 years, retiring in 1988. They served in catering at the church and as deacons. Abe served on various church committees and on the private school board. He sang in choirs, male choirs and the Bakerview Fellowship choir.

He had open heart surgery in 1980. He is mourned by his loving wife Katherine, having been married for 61 years. He will be greatly missed by his children; Walter (Lois), Joyce (Hank) Regehr, Ken (Sylvia), Ron (Carole), Irene (Bob) Smith together with 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He also leaves behind a brother Jack (Marlene) and 3 sisters Margaret Matties, Ann (Jake) Enns and Susan (Chuck) McWhirter and many other dear family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 27, 2003, from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home. A Graveside Service will be held at Maclure Road Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. followed by a service to celebrate his life at 2:30 p.m. at Bakerview M.B. Church. In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully request donations to the ALS Society. A designated table for donations will be available at the service.

"...and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever".
