Abram John Esau died Mar. 24, 2011 at 97. He was born Oct. 4, 1913 in Kuban, Russia to Johann and Sara (Wiens) Esau. A number of years later they moved to Molotschna, Ukraine for a time, then to Suvorovka, Russia. It was here in Suvorovka when Abe was only 11, his mother died, and a year later, his father married Mary Reimer.
The family immigrated to Canada, arriving in Langham, Sask., in October 1925 when Abe was 12. They bought a farm in Yarrow, B.C., in late 1928.
Abe worked as a farmhand on the Well's Edenbank Farm in Sardis. It was when he was alone at work on the farm, at the age of 17, Abe prayed, "I am yours for whatever ministry you have for me, even if it is overseas". He attended Winkler (Man.) Bible Institute and Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alta. During this time he met Sarah Martens and they were married in Yarrow, B.C., June 7, 1942.
After Abe graduated from MB Bible College, Winnipeg, in 1947, Abe & Sarah left for service in the Belgian Congo where they spent some 30 years. It was in the Congo that all of their six children were born.
In 1980, Abe and Sarah retired from the mission field. Sarah died of breast cancer 5 years later in 1985.
Abe married Katie Siemens in 1987. They enjoyed several mission trips to Africa and India. In 2010, they moved to Menno Home where they remained until Abe went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2011.
Abe is predeceased by his first wife Sarah and his siblings Elizabeth, John, Justina, Jacob, Nick, Anna, Peter and Tina.
Abram is mourned by Katie; children Lois (Allen) Epp, Merilyn (Gary) Nuss, Carol (Randy) Peters, Harold (Vangie), Dan (Brenda), Esther (Wes) Friesen; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters Katie & Gertie.
A Celebration of Life was held Saturday April 2, 2011 at the Clearbrook MB Church with Pastor Walter Wiens officiating. Pall Bearers were Jason Esau, Kurtis Peters, Ryan Esau, Craig Peters, Brent Peters, Colin Friesen. Honorary Pall Bearers were Dale Epp, Jonathan Nuss and Jordan Nuss. Burial was at the Yarrow Cemetery.
